There you are like St. George, dagger in hand, slaying the Dragon of Boards! Congratulations!
All of your work and effort paid off. You became a Ranger and should be very proud. I am very
proud of you. It is a marvelous victory and I hope the celebration is long and loud!
When hard work, discipline, poise, confidence, and excellence were required you came through.
It's never easy to get a difficult, challenging job done and a million good excuses can be used for
failure. There is really only one common path to victory: hard work, courage, desire. Your
Coach is very happy for you tonight. You did it!
The Board has a certificate and so do the Rangers. After great sacrifice and hard work the
Ranger Victory Certificate is a momento of your struggle. It celebrates, commemorates, and
memorializes the Great Battle won. Its centerpiece is the beautiful and famous picture of St.
George as he appears on the British Gold Soverign - dagger in hand, slaying the dragon of
Boards. Gold coins, of course, have a long history when it comes to soldiers and to the booty of
war. One wonders how many have viewed this image as they returned home from distant lands
to celebrate success and move on with their lives, victorious from the battlefield.
The certificate also celebrates our time together. A phrase atop the Holworthy Gate in
Harvard Yard states, "In Memory of Dear Old Times." The time we shared was agonizing and
difficult at times, yet intense, meaningful and perphaps even "dear" as it is the final stop on a
long journey of academic achievement.
The certificate is a gift from your Coach and nothing gives me more satisfaction than signing a
Ranger Victory Certificate. "Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duty and so bear ourselves
that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years men will say, "This
was their finest hour" (Winston Churchill). We've both been lucky and have had many fine
hours but as you look back upon this momentous victory it will stand among your best.
So there you are, dagger in hand, slaying the dragon of Boards! I feel honored to have seen you
at your best, trying to imrove yourself - just as you always have. Congratulations. The night
drop in heavy weather was successful. No hostages were taken. You won!
